Hike Pleasures find History Treasures.

This is why I love venturing to new places: I stumbled onto the first mining site in the entire State of California the other day when my hike ended.

I saw a brick monument across the parking lot where my car was parked and went to investigate. I wandered further and discovered an old one-way bridge and crossed it, to its left stood another brick monument to the First Adobe Hotel in California! (it serves as a restaurant now)

Hiking gives me the wonderful opportunity to enjoy nature, local animals, birds, awesome views, photography, and hidden landmarks... not to mention the hearty exercise and fresh air!

Happy Lesson: Use weekend time to wonder around your community, you never know, historical treasures might find you!

...Go fly a kite!

The photo seems to say "If you cannot fly away, go fly a kite instead." Not a bad idea eh? Some trips get canceled or postponed due to unexpected events or simply because you were really not serious about flying to far away places like, oh I don't know... Canada, or Ireland, or Africa...?

Flying is fun; I mean kite flying. Take the cheap -and safe- route instead... Go and fly a kite this season!

Whatever Makes You Happy...

I love going to new places, especially weekend festivals where artists show off their latest crafts. Last weekend I had a great shopping day and found cool pieces for me and my new residence.

It makes me happy to find things that I did not buy in the past but still want to purchase. Do you know what I am talking about? The piece of jewelry or the hat you thought was too expensive a year ago is now in front of you as if asking, "Are you going to take me home now?"

Almost ten years ago I passed on a beautiful Chilean cowhide I saw at a Artisan Market in Peru and since then regretted not buying it. So, when I saw three unique Brazilian cowhides on display in Mountain View's Art Fest last weekend, I knew I was treating myself to a very happy moment, no matter the cost.

Now I have to decide whether to leave it on the floor or hang it on the wall. Decisions, decisions...

The Game Changes.

Life does not consist of work alone, but work and play! Our apartment complex offers cool amenities, one of which is a pool table and I play it every other week. My game has improved and sometimes I get to win!
Playing pool is really entertaining, but unfortunately, most people visit pubs to play where smoke and loud music is common. Since I am moving next month I am thinking about changing hobbies and perhaps golf is lining up for me?

Happiness is Priceless

Just a short note:
Our real estate proposal was accepted by the sellers and in a day or two our savvy realtor will confirm other preliminary paperwork. We cannot tell you how excited we are! Actually, that's what I'm doing... and we are thrilled.

Everything in that house is perfect to us except that we plan to start a vegetable garden in the backyard, use epoxy paint to treat the garage floors, and build shelves in the garage for yard tools. The "WELCOME" mat is waiting to be placed on our new front porch... even though not everybody will be invited. ~ha.

Enchanted by Upcoming Move.

I feel so blessed! After moving from North Carolina to California a year ago with my family, we rented an apartment at a complex with cool amenities such as pools, exercise rooms, covered parking, gated entry, lawn maintenance, and fun quarterly gatherings.

A year into the lease, we decided to contact a very personable real estate agent who showed us over 30 homes in the area. We liked a few places, but the last house we visited was the one. It had everything we were looking for and more: manicure lawns, porch, romantic backyard, big patio, fences, view of green areas, updated kitchen, wood burner, two car garage, palm trees, and space for a vegetable garden.

The realtor had happy goosebumps when she showed it to us only because she knew what we were looking for: Comfort, elegance, views, space, and a quiet neighborhood. So we bought it! and let me tell "y'all" that for the price we paid we could have bought a mansion in the Carolinas, or 1,000 acres in Texas. ~ Yessiree bob!

Since a week ago we have packed a few boxes and are planning to move by the first week in June. My husband says that he's giving me a house for my birthday and I like hearing that.

"Airport Hoops!"

"Airport Hoops!"
By ElenaMartina

United Airlines flight #664 leaving San Francisco was to fly me to Chicago on my way to North Carolina to visit family. At the gate, several people were looking tanned, wearing shorts, and sporting Maui shirts apparently back from a very nice vacation.

We were told our plane was full and the airline offered to put passenger's carry-on luggage in the cargo area - free of charge. I remembered my daughter telling me once that she took such offer before only for her suitcase to be placed on a later flight. I did not want the possibly of a late delivery, so I declined.

Once on board, I sat down and looked out my window to watch the luggage being transported alongside a large horizontal box stamped with: "Human Remains." The sight surprised me as I have never seen a coffin go in the belly of a plane before.

After that unsettling scene, I began to feel encroached in my seat and my right elbow touched my neighbor's arm while I repositioned myself. Later, he coughed, and I immediately turned on the vent to channel his cough away. When the passenger in front of me also coughed, I thought of asking if anybody had a fashionable health mask to spare.

Since there was nothing I could do, I grabbed a magazine from my bag and tried to turn my reading light on, but it did not work. Strangely, my light switch turned my neighbor's light off, and when he tried his switch, it turned my light on. I thought the wiring was inauspicious, but hey, I had a dead body under me, my displeasure was minor in comparison.

In flight and now six in the morning, the sunrise appeared through my window and I was appreciating the beauty of the snow covered mountains below when the flight attendant in the aisle announced, "Snacks for purchase." Her shout out ruined my moment as I turned and asked for hot tea - and that is all I got by the way, no peanuts or pretzels were offered. I simply could not be bothered with television that early and closed my eyes, but the crisp sound of a newspaper folding and unfolding behind me kept my senses awake.

During a three-hour layover in Chicago, I decided to pass the time looking at shops, and bought a bag of peanuts double dipped in chocolate. When the receipt was handed to me, it read: $6.66. "Not a great omen," I said to the cashier. She was taken aback when she looked at it and agreed with me.

The first flight delay was for 20 minutes and I heard the airline personnel ask if anyone would give up their seat for a later flight and receive a $400 travel voucher plus a meal ticket. A young man stood up and took their offer. A second delay added 30 more minutes, but we finally boarded a small Express Jet where it was impossible to hear yourself think. A seat with minimal leg room greeted me, but I arrived safely in Greensboro, North Carolina. Phew!

After four days with family, I was headed once again to the airport and did not realize that my blouse had metallic art embroidered onto it. It made the scanner go off and I was asked to wait for a pat down.

I watched as a female T.S.A. employee put on elastic gloves, like doctors do before an exam, and approach me. She said in detail what she was going to do to me. I felt silly standing there with my arms stretched out, palms up, while she did what she had to do. And yes, she slightly touched every private place.

With that ordeal over, I again waived good-bye to my family who watched the entire event from afar.

United Airlines flight #7377 was delayed twice and later canceled. The airline called passengers for seat reassignments to a new flight; which meant passing through guarded airport areas as if we had just arrived from somewhere.

My new destination was Washington Dulles Airport, departing two hours later. Passengers were understandably annoyed, but I somehow was managing my odyssey extremely well, that is, until I went through security again, where I was patted down once more by another T.S.A. agent.

The journey did not end there; once onboard I noticed the flight attendant to be in his 60's and wondered if in an emergency, I would be helping him rather than him helping me. I sat down and thought "What else could seem wrong?" when I noticed the seal of my window unattached at the wall. I turned to my neighbor passenger and pointed at my window; alarmed, she said, "Should we say something?"

We arrived safely, to Washington D.C., happy that my window held on and that we made it alive. My next flight home was uneventful, and despite jumping through airline hoops, I made it safely to my final destination: Home, sweet home.

A New Look... at Happy Living!

In 2010 I decided to do two outlandish things: cut my hair extremely short and author a book.  I wanted a new look for the new year and to prove to myself that I could write a novel. The haircut was easy, but writing a book? Well, that idea has tested my patience several times.

Reasonable advice would be that you must plan ahead to attain success; but there are risks that result from spur of the moment decisions as we opt to do new things such as buying a car, taking a new job, creating a blog, or moving cross country. Wait... I have done all of these in just 12 months!

Rationalizing decisions requires common sense and acceptance  of the risks involved.  You must take some chances to bring success into your life, whether you are typically a risk taker or not.
Writing a book is not easy, and I have learned a lot from other writers, book authors, attending conferences and writing clubs. Fact is, writing a book is not for everyone. As a columnist and reporter, I am glad I gave myself that writing goal. I was convinced that I could definitely do it.
When you propose and positively convince yourself to do something you have never done before, you will find that you are well ahead of others who only dream about their goals becoming true.
