You would think a restauranteur or a sign maker would know how to spell a well known word such as restaurant, but apparently not. While attending a festival in Los Altos, California, we came across a peculiar sign (pic) hanging from a downtown eatery.
Misspellings happen to anyone, but think about it, the owner ordered the sign, approved the bill of sale, had it made, read it when it arrived, and hung it. Did no-one notice the blunder? And what about the sign maker responsibility? Was the owner reimbursed or was the sign left behind after the protest did not get resolved? But why, I wonder, would the owner hang it up!
I could have asked an employee of the establishment these questions, but opted to simply take a quick photograph and walk away. Whatever the case may be, everyone is capable of making mistakes. We see it daily as we read newspapers, books, pamphlets, blogs, and even notes from our very loved ones.
A Children's Developmental Center in North Carolina ordered a large metal plaque to hang on its brick entrance wall. The sign read "Childrens Developmental Center" without the apostrophe. With no time to exchange the sign for a new one, management profusely apologized to high officials who attended the ribbon cutting ceremony two days later. The blunder was public, and yes, not placing a tiny punctuation mark misspelled the main word.
I suspect misspellings will continue to happen because the eye cannot catch them all. The restaurant sign made me smile and happily ponder at the same time.
