Earthquakes and tremors have always fascinated me. In South America where I grew up, these quakes were a regular occurrence, much like in California where I am currently residing.
One particular earthquake I will never forget; not that I was scared, but because it came to me during a dream the preceding afternoon. I was only 10 years old and I remember telling one of my brothers as I woke up from my siesta.
The earthquake occurred in Lima-Perú in 1974. It fascinated me that it came as a premonition in my sleep and I was glad I revealed it to my family before it happened otherwise they would have never believed me.
The quake measured a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale and lasted around 2 minutes. Our home was very old, a three floor house with the bedrooms situated on the second and third floors. Everyone was present except for a brother who had left for work.
The quake started slowly then everything began to shake. Our wooden stairs zig-zaged before us with incredible force, preventing us from going downstairs. A sibling was already downstairs and my mother yelled for him not to come up as we couldn't go down. We held each other in the center of the second floor under the bedroom door beams. The last few seconds before ending I heard a glass crash to the floor and break. Everyone was okay, except for the obvious scare.
While in California I have experienced a few tremors and light earthquakes, but experiencing it with someone who had never felt them before was most memorable. It happened in Palm Springs during a vacation with my two young children. I was in the bathroom putting on make-up when I felt the obvious sounds and movements of a quake. My children were in the main room, waiting for me to go out. I heard my daughter said, "What's that? Mom! Mom!" and she and her brother came running to me asking again, bewildered, what was going on.
I laughed. I told them it was an earthquake and that everything was okay now.
