Every Writer Needs a Hobby

Moving to California from North Carolina in May 2010 was a huge task to undertake. As I get used to my new state, I am noticing many older cars driving the roads.

Back in 2004, I was dating an engineer who owned a 1961 Corvette Convertible that he drove only to car shows and on weekends. The Chevy was an eye catching car that turned heads when it passed by. Then in 2008, my son purchased a 1967 Volkswagen Van that was ultimately left with me to sell when he moved away from home. After those experiences, I imagined owning an antique car, so when I got established in Silicon Valley I started searching on Craigslist for classics. The car needed to be automatic since I cannot drive stick shift, and had to be in drivable condition as I did not want to fix anything.

I was prepared to pay a fair amount of money if the car was right for me. I had spent hours looking at pictures and reading car ads, when a 1965 Dodge Dart GT took my attention. The car was beautiful (see pictures), the paint was perfect, the seats looked comfortable, was automatic, and ready for a test drive.

The previous owner had moved to Chicago and his brother showed it to me one afternoon. I had a mechanic inspect it, haggled the price down a bit, and happily bought it! The Dart, which I named "Stellaaa!" a line from Streetcar Named Desire drives like a dream.
